The Music

In 2006 I participated in the Blogathon with my chosen charity being Sweet Relief.

I asked a number of my favorite musicians to donate an unreleased music track to the cause. These tracks are archived below as MP3s.

All tracks are donated by the artists and used with their permission.

To get a track, Right-Click (or Control-Click on Mac) and save it to your computer.

I am paying for the bandwidth myself and I therefore beg you to not hotlink to a track from your own site. Feel free to link to my front page, though.

Remember that these artists donated the tracks, and I am putting them here for you to download, to encourage you to donate to Sweet Relief. If you enjoy the music, PLEASE donate to this wonderful charity.

Akron / Family put out two wonderful records in 2005. One of them was with Angels of Light (see below) which is how I first heard them. I hurried out and bought their self-titled record, which didn’t disappoint. They were the first band to respond to my request for tracks for this event. Hopefully they’ll one day fully release Eskimo, the album August Fans is from, which they describe as “An old homemade album”. I know I’d love to hear it.

Fronted by Cambodian pop star Ch’hom Nimol, who sings in Khmer, the Los Angeles sextet blends the rhythms of ’60s Cambodian pop – heavily influenced by American surf, rock and early psychedelic garage bands – with their own eclectic mix of American and international styles. The original version of this track is on Dengue Fever’s self-titled first album, which you should buy and play real loud because Cambodian-American Psychedelia kicks ass.

Fake (Dan Reetz) contacted me after my 2003 Blogathon in which Sybarite and Manitoba (now, Caribou) donated tracks. We had music taste in common and he asked me if I’d listen to his unreleased album, You Are Not Dead, and let him know what I thought. I loved it. Without exageration, it was one of the best albums I heard in 2005. He’s still without a label.

I first heard of the Handsome Family from the “always demure” (Rennie’s words) Sally Timms in 1996 or so. I immediately bought all their records and signed up for their mailing list. I met Rennie in person earlier this month and she was as lovely as I expected. They put on a terrific live show that night and played this song, the original version of which appears on their recent release, Last Days of Wonder, which was released by Carrot Top Records.

With any luck, I’ll have Rennie paint my dog, Satchel, in the not too distant future.

I’ve played Jana Hunter’s Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom to death. The track “Laughing and Crying” was on repeat when I wrote issues 10 and 11 of Wrestle the Future to the Fucking Ground. She didn’t have much to say about the demo, Recess, provided, but to say it’s “real dark” and “at least not filled with glaring fuck-ups.” Like much of her work, I think it’s wonderfully haunting.

Josh Millard records music and geeks out in Portland, Oregon, where he runs a musical newspaper, The Aural Times. The subject of this song hits a little close to home.

A Man in a Boat in the Water is a waltzy meditation on songwriting and evocatation and the ethics of ruining fictional people’s lives for the sake of a compelling story.

In 2000, I drove my roommate absolutely nuts playing The Kingsbury Manx’s self-titled first release until I wore out the laser in my CD player. A little while later I saw the band open for Joe Pernice (if I remember correctly) at Toronto’s Lee’s Palace. The audience wouldn’t shut up (they rarely do during openers in Toronto), but I loved it nonetheless.
Kingsbury Manx Says

An 8-track demo for a song that we may (or may not) record in the future. This version is straight off the 8-track in it’s infant form; a song embryo.

The Kingsbury Manx are William Taylor, Ryan Richardson, Clarque Blomquist, and Paul Finn.

A new member of the Fading Captain Series, Psycho and the Birds is the latest side project from former Guided By Voices leader Robert Pollard. Legendary for his song writing prowess, Bob has many demos and song ideas that he records in to his boom box that never get past that initial first recording. He came up with idea of sending some of these demos to Todd Tobias (GBV/Robert Pollard producer and Circus Devils collaborator) and asking him to add full band accompaniment while keeping the raw sound and feel of an original demo.
Psycho and the Birds Says
Organic Comes On is from the second Psycho and the Birds release Check Your Zoo (Fading Captain Series #43). This EP will be released the first week of August, 2006, through mail order only and then will be available in stores some time in late August.

This track, like everything RRRC does, was “created entirely in the digital realm from snips and shards of audio–looped and processed, shaped and soldered, massaged and mangled–until it feels like a field recording from somewhere that doesn’t appear on any map.”

Radio Room Recording Co. is unsigned.

I fell in love with Ruth’s voice the first time I heard The Guthries. I tried to contact her in 2003 to donate a track for my previous blogathon entry, but couldn’t swing it. Though it was completely my own fault, she donated two tracks this year which almost makes my previous inept effort forgettable.
Ruth Minnikin Says
To be rerecorded for my new album. The words came from a war poet’s poem written in 1917 by James Lyons from Manchester (public domain). I wrote the melody and music after being asked to donate a song for a British compilation (it hasn’t been released yet).
